How are your Thanksgiving weekend plans looking? Are you open to suggestions? We recommend eating too much on Thursday, staying home Friday, participating in Small Business Saturday, and then heading over to Gallery Erato on Sunday for our newest Salon of SEAF: Naughty Book Upcycling & Art Making.
Make Art With Us on November 25th
Come join Molly Maloney – the delightfully creative wit behind Glitter & Snark – for an afternoon of crafting and making art with words and books. We will be diving deep (so deep) into our retired library collection, full of out of date text books, comics, pulp novels, and repeat titles. Be warned! This will involve cutting and disassembling books. This activity is not recommend for traditional book fetishists. Molly says the first time one rips the page out of a book can be heart-rending, but as long as your intentions are pure and art focused, you will be ok.
Use Our Ideas, Or Bring Your Own
So what kind of art can you make with old books and periodicals? Well, let us walk you through some possibilities from collages to blackout poetry to simply drawing or stamping on a unique background. Molly will have some sample ideas to get you started, which can be made as simple or elaborate as you like. You can also just let your imagination run away with you!
Your studio fee gives you access to hundreds of books that can be used in any creative way you think of. Basic supplies such as scissors, glue, paper, and ink will be on hand. Plus a few extra fancy items like NSFW stamps and a die cutter and dies. You are also welcome to bring your own supplies – like those glitter gel pens that have been languishing in your desk drawer. Do keep an eye on your gear so that it doesn’t get mixed in with the communal supplies. Additionally, admission includes a bag of books to take home for future art and crafting.
Though speaking of glitter – this is a no-loose-glitter art making event! Self contained craft supplies like glitter glue are allowed, but nothing that will leave glitter behind.
Advanced tickets can be purchased here.
The Salon is open from noon until 3pm on Sunday, November 25, 2018. Drop in for part of the day or stay the whole three hours. This event is open to all, but those under 18 must be accompanied by a responsible adult. As always, Gallery Erato is a space that welcomes and celebrates all sexes, genders, races, ethnicities, sexual orientations, relationship orientations, and creeds. No one will be turned away for lack of funds.
Gallery Erato is located at 309 1st Ave S Seattle 98104. The main floor of the Gallery is fully accessible, with one 3″ step at the front entry. We have a ramp available upon request that is quick to set up. Please feel free to contact Gallery Erato with accommodation requests.
